Taditional and emerging technologies in their classroom to support teaching and learning

Tablets are replacing our textbooks, and we can research just about anything that we want to on our smartphones. As educators we have seen firsthand the benefits of technology in the classroom. As we sail through the 21st century, technology in the classroom is becoming more and more predominant. We also recognize the importance of developing these technological skills in students, so they will be prepared to enter the workforce once they complete their schooling. As teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies (tablets, iPads, Smart Boards, digital cameras, computers), while students are using advanced technology to shape how they learn and by embracing and integrating technology in the classroom, we are setting our students up for a successful life outside of school. Subjects that students deem challenging or boring can become more interesting with virtual lessons, through a video, or when using a tablet. In the future classroom, students may just need an electronic device to access all their homework and all other learning resources in the Cloud. This means no more lugging heavy textbooks to school and having constant access to your reading materials if you have an Internet connection. People are smitten with new technologies but often fail to consider the appropriate use of traditional technologies that are used so often in the classroom such as Chalkboard / Dry Erase Board / Whiteboard which are inexpensive, easy to use, widely available. Overhead Projectors which can be used under regular lighting, use different colors, prepare materials well before class, face student while writing. When it comes to evaluating technology in the classroom, it could be a simple list that us teachers can use to decipher how the technology is being used in a lesson.

1.       Is the technology being used “Just because it’s there”?

2.       Is the technology allowing the teacher/students to do Old things in Old ways?

3.       Is the technology allowing the teacher/students to do Old things in New ways?

4.       Is the technology creating new and different learning experiences for the students?

Teaching Style, Students, and Classroom Activites

I like to consider my self a patient and laid back teacher but in a good way. I know that Math is not everyone's strong suit and a lot of us struggle with the subject no matter the age. So I try and remember that when teaching my students so they can grow a love for the subject and not be fearful of it. Which helps them in understanding the concepts and retaining the information better. My students are my pride and joy all 25 of them. They each are unique and bring excitement to my life. I love when I help them enjoy math and I especially love the infamous "AHA MOMENT". My favorite classroom activities are completing anchor charts with my students when we are covering new material or when they need additional ways of grasping a concept that they might be struggling with. My students love completing problems on the promethium board, I think it makes them feel like a teacher for a little while. When I see my students are getting bored or struggling and losing interest I like to bust out in a game. Our particular favorite is a game called "Travel" to see who can bypass all the students in particular math questions and make it all the way to the teacher. I love to have my students do additional resources at home to strengthen their knowledge because learning continues outside the classroom and two of my favorites are Starfall and Iready.

Welcome

Hello everyone and Welcome to my Blog. I am a very Eager, and Excited Elementary teacher. I have taught grades Kinder through 3rd grade, with 3rd being my absolute favorite. I created this blog for my students , parents and anyone who needed information or additional resources to assist their child in being successful in their early elementary years. I'm currently teaching 3rd grade at South Miami Heights Ele, and have been doing so for almost 5 years and I have been teaching for a total of 15 years. I absolutely adore my students a lot of them I have watch grow and blossom in to great students and I have the pleasure of teaching their brother and sisters as well. My core subject I teach is Math. When I was a student myself I struggled in math and always had a hard time understanding concepts and I just couldn't stand it. But one year in 7th grade I was blessed with an awesome math teacher that helped me find the joy in Math. And that year something triggered for me and I started to love Math and always wanted to participate and push myself further. So when I graduated from high school I knew I would become a Math teacher and teacher to Early Childhood. My Educational Philosophy is  every one deserves a great education not matter their sex, nationality, religion, or economic status. If we would just take the time to invest in are younger generations we would do the world and our future a great service.
